The Yellow Collared Macaw is also known as the Yellow Naped Macaw or Golden Collared Macaw and can be found in South American countries like Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina.
The Yellow Collared Macaw is one of the smallest Macaws and breeders call it “The Mini Macaw”. This little bird reaches approximately 15 inches from the beak to the tail feathers.
Captive Yellow Collared Macaws, when cared for properly, can live upwards of 50 years.
This bird species is extremely affectionate and loyal. It thrives for attention and tries to get it by all means possible. They are very intelligent and they always look for new ways to escape from their cage. This is why the owners should be careful about locking the cage properly. Some people say that these birds are one-person pets. This means they will get attached to one family member and loose interest in the others. Despite that, they are great family pets.
The Yellow Macaws have a blue forehead and maroon tail with bright blue hues on the tip of the tail. The body is green with some yellow bands on the neck. All the specimens have black beaks that fade into a white point at the end of the upper mandible.
The region of origin of these birds, some countries in Central South America South, provides them with a variety of seeds type, fruits and vegetables. This means that the Yellow Collared Macaws aren’t picky birds and they love to eat. They especially like exotic fruits, nuts and vegetables. The meal of a captive Yellow Collared Macaw should consist in all those plus a variety of quality pellets and seeds supplements. A balanced diet full of nutrients will make your pet birds happy..
These bright birds love to play and stretch their wings. Allow your Yellow Collared Macaws at least 2 hours out of the cage every day. This will maintain the physical and mental health. During the playtime outside of the cage these little acrobats will stretch the legs and wings by flying a little bit around the room. Also, buy your bird some toys for chewing and also a stand for climbing.
There are few pet birds more comical and charming than the mini Macaws. They are crafty and very intelligent. Because they have a wonderful personality and a small size, they are very easy to take care of. Besides that, if you adopt them as babies, they will be extremely easy to tame and train. The Yellow Macaws make a perfect choice for people who never had a pet bird.
The thing with the Yellow Collared Macaws, is that, like other Macaws, they tend to get very affectionate with one family member, usually the one who takes care of them the most.
This is why when they are young, they must be socialized with all the family members. In this way, it will be easier for them to create a strong bond with everybody.
Most of the Yellow Collared Macaws are quite talkative. If you repeat words around them, they will memorize them and try to verbalize. Breeders say that some mini Macaws speak much clearer than the large Macaw species.
Also, try to keep in mind that they constantly crave for attention and if you are a busy person and don’t have time to be with your pet, a mini Macaw is not the right bird for you.
The large Macaws are quite noisy and if you think that the mini Macaws are any different, you are wrong. If they feel neglected, they can scream really loud for a long period of time. Because of this, they could bother your neighbors or other family members.
In conclusion, just like any other bird, with proper training, the Yellow Collared Macaw can make a lively, entertaining bird, a great companion for you and your family. With a bit of discipline, and love, you will have a loyal and affectionate feathered friend.
